CORTLAND, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University wrestling team dominated Alfred State 46-3 before falling to host SUNY Cortland 28-21 at the Red Dragon Duals on Saturday afternoon at Corey Gymnasium.
The Cardinals (1-1), in their first dual of the season, earned bonus points with eight of their nine match victories against Alfred State. Dylan Devine (165), Trevor Sheehan (174), Braydon Vandenberg (197) and Jackson Burns (285) won by pin, while Derek Bernardino (133), Torin Bishop (149) and Paul Lichter (157) beat their opponents by technical fall. Charlie Rossner (184) won his match by major decision.
Against Cortland, Fisher lost the dual's first four matches but rallied to get back in it. Lichter fought for a 7-4 decision to start the run, while Devine and Sheehan recorded their second pins of the day to cut Cortland's lead to three, 18-15.
The Red Dragons won two of the final three matches – one by injury default – to secure the victory. Burns finished the dual by pinning his opponent for his second fall of the day.
