Women's Volleyball Clinches No. 2 Seed For E8 Championship With Win Over Alfred

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team clinched the No. 2 seed for the Empire 8 Women's Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 victory over Alfred University on Saturday at Manning and Napier Varsity Gym. 

The Cardinals, who improved to 16-8 overall, will play two non-conference matches next week to conclude the regular season. The Empire 8 Women's Volleyball Championship begins on Tuesday, Nov. 12. 

Match Notes

  • The Cardinals dominated the first two sets (25-15 and 25-14) before dropping the third set (22-25). They finished the Saxons off in the fourth, winning 25-21. 

  • The Cardinals have won 22 of their 23 matches against Alfred since 2005. 

  • The Cardinals finished their Empire 8 regular-season schedule 9-2. They swept six of their conference opponents. 

  • Freshman outside hitter Lydia Fraser recorded a career-high 18 kills. 

  • Fraser, who had 20 points, also finished with a career-high .469 hitting percentage.

  • Sophomore middle blocker Ana Gutman had 14 kills and registered a .520 hitting percentage. 

  • Gutman has hit .400 or better in 12 matches this year, including in the last six. She leads the Empire 8 in overall hitting percentage (.383). 

  • Junior setter Reilly Morrow had 41 assists. She has had more than 40 assists in three of the Cardinals' matches this season. 

  • Junior middle blocker/outside hitter Marilyn Whitcavitch had a career-high five service aces. 

  • The Cardinals had a 51-34 advantage in kills and a 17-6 edge in service aces. Alfred had 14 service errors.

The Cardinals face RIT (17-11) next Friday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. at Manning and Napier Varsity Gym. They swept the Tigers last season.
