PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 1-seeded St. John Fisher University men's soccer team scored early and held on the rest of the way for a 1-0 victory over No. 8-seeded Russell Sage in the first round of the Empire 8 Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday evening at Growney Stadium.
The Cardinals (10-4-4) will host No. 5-seeded SUNY Brockport (7-6-4) in the Empire 8 semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. They have reached the conference semifinals in each of Jack Burgasser's five seasons as head coach of the program.
Senior Riley Rease scored his fifth goal of the season – and fourth in his last five games – to put the Cardinals ahead at the 5:47 mark in the first half. The forward has 13 points over 12 games this season, the second most on the team.
The Cardinals' defense – as it did so many times in the regular season – took care of the rest. Goalkeeper Christian Burkhart made five saves and recorded his 11th shutout of the season, the most in the Empire 8 and tied for the most in all of Division III. The Cardinals, who haven't allowed a goal since Oct. 16, have blanked six of their last seven opponents.
The Gators played shorthanded – and without their head coach on the sidelines – for a significant chunk of the second half. They were assessed three red cards at the 71:42 mark.
The Cardinals have won seven straight games since their 2-1 loss to the Gators on Oct. 5. They have outscored their opponents 16-1 in that stretch.
