PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 1-seeded St. John Fisher University men's soccer team beat No. 5-seeded SUNY Brockport (7-6-5) in penalty kicks on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium to advance to the Empire 8 title game for the second consecutive year.
The Cardinals (10-4-5) will host No. 7-seeded Elmira (6-8-4) in a rematch of last year's conference championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Soaring Eagles beat the Cardinals 4-2 in penalty kicks in that game to secure a spot in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
Both teams' defenses and goalkeepers fended off a handful of quality scoring chances throughout regulation and overtime on Wednesday night. And both teams' offenses had at least one shot apiece that came within inches of breaking the 0-0 tie.
For Brockport, that opportunity came just minutes into the game when Mauricio Leiva's shot hit the left post and bounced out of play. St. John Fisher had its oh-so-close moment with about seven minutes remaining – on senior midfielder Troy Jezioro's screamer that sailed just high of the goal.
After two 10-minute overtime periods could not settle the Empire 8 semifinal stalemate, the Cardinals took care of the Golden Eagles quickly in penalty kicks. Jezioro and fellow seniors Jacob McGinnis, Adam Grover and Joey Avallone converted on their chances, while Brockport put just one of its attempts past Fisher goalkeeper Christian Burkhart. The graduate student made sprawling stops on attempts by Russ Domm and Alex Rivara.
Burkhart, who made three saves, recorded his Division III-leading 12th shutout of the season. The Cardinals have not allowed a goal in regulation or overtime in their last five games.
