Field Hockey Falls Short In Double Overtime To #19 Geneseo

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University field hockey team fell 1-0 on Wednesday night to #19 Geneseo in double-overtime at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals dropped to 5-7 overall (3-1 Empire 8) and suffered their first loss in league play, while the Knights remained unbeaten in the league (5-0) and improved to 11-1 overall.

In a game where Fisher was outshot 35-2, the true scoring opportunities were few and far between for Geneseo. Cardinal defenders blocked the majority of Geneseo shots, only allowing 13 of their 35 to reach goal. Geneseo tallied 31 total penalty corners, with ten of them coming in the 4th period.

Cardinals senior goalkeeper Senja Matson recorded 12 saves on the game, her second-highest total so far this season. Both Cardinals shot attempts occured in the first period. The lone shot on goal came from the junior midfielder Lily Humphrey.

Despite the gap in shots and penalty corners, the Cardinals were neck-and-neck with the Knights, only allowing two shots on goal the entire second half. With seven minutes left in the sudden-death second overtime, Olivia Hernick found the back of the net to beat the Cardinals. The Knights goal was assisted by Shannon Cunningham.
