ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 21 University of Rochester field hockey team broke a 1-1 tie early in the fourth quarter to beat the St. John Fisher Cardinals 2-1 on Wednesday night at Fauver Stadium.
The Cardinals dropped to 6-8 overall, while the Yellowjackets improved to 11-3 with the non-conference victory. Fisher has four games left in the regular season, all of them Empire 8 contests.
A pair of Fisher freshmen forwards – Avery McLaughlin and Sam Current – connected to open the scoring just more than a minute into the second quarter. Current scored her first career goal, while McLaughlin tallied her second career assist to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Rochester tied the game about three minutes later when Zoe Conomikes found the back of the net on an assist from Kristina Fedorova.
The Yellowjackets broke the tie just more than two minutes into the fourth quarter, taking a 2-1 lead on Hannah Mehta's unassisted, game-winning goal.
Cardinals senior goalkeeper Senja Matson faced several shots throughout the contest and made 10 saves, the third-most she's had this season.
