ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team were on the road on Friday night to play their first game of 2024. They took on Empire 8 opposition, Alfred University, and earned the win by a final score of 85-63.
 
The Saxons got off to a fast start, taking a 10-3 lead in the opening four minutes. The Cardinals quickly got back into the game thanks to three-pointers by 
Jack Foley and 
Joe Morrell. The lead was extended to double digits with 10:37 to play in the first half when Foley knocked down another three to put the team ahead 22-13. The Saxons tried to fight back but key baskets by 
Matt Lettko and 
Daniel Cook gave Fisher a 43-26 advantage going into halftime.
 
The Cardinals came out on fire in the second half, pushing their lead to 20+ points thanks to a layup by 
Connor Recore. Alfred University got back into the game with 10:53 to go, cutting the deficit to 14, but layups by 
Brad Fowler and 
Connor Williams pushed Fisher back in front by 19 a minute later. The Cardinals walked away with a comfortable 85-73 win.
 
Cook scored 13 points, while collecting nine rebounds. Recore added 13 points of his own and grabbed six rebounds. McRoy was the third Cardinal with double-digit scoring, contributing 10 points.
 
Fisher remain on the road on Saturday against Elmira College for back-to-back Empire 8 games. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
