PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team concluded their home tournament with games against #17 Lasell University and Misericordia University. The Cardinals walked away with two victories and see their record remain unblemished at 6-0.
Cardinals 3 – Lasers 2
Fisher jumped out to a quick lead in the first set, using six
Gavin Newman aces to go ahead 14-1. They maintained control and claimed the 25-11 victory, but the Lasers showed that it was an anomaly. The second frame was tight, with both teams trading points, and despite a 24-22 lead by Fisher, it was Lasell that scored four straight to even the match at 1-1.
The Cardinals were the team to comeback late into set three. They faced a 23-21 deficit, but back-to-back kills by
Casey Jackson evened the score and a few points later, consecutive errors by the opposition helped Fisher take the set and the 2-1 lead. The fourth set followed the same trend of going into extra points, but it was the Lasers that scored back-to-back to win the set 28-26 to send it to a fifth. Fisher took control early on, jumping to a 7-4 advantage, and rode that to a 15-10 set and match win.
Jake Baker was impressive with 15 kills, four service aces and four digs.
Griffin Stella added 12 kills of his own to go along with three block assists and three aces. Newman finished with 43 digs and 11 service aces.
Cardinals 3 – Cougars 0
The matchup with Misericordia was a comfortable sweep for Fisher. In the first set, they jumped out to a 6-0 lead and despite the Cougars fighting back, kills by Baker and Rauh delivered the first win of the match. The second frame began tightly contested, but kills by Newman and Jackson pushed Fisher in front by three and errors by the opposition extended the advantage even more. The Cardinals ended the set on a 7-1 run and continued that momentum in the third. Points by Baker, Stella and Newman gave the team the lead early and they cruised to a 25-17 set win and 3-0 match victory.
Baker had another strong game, recording 13 kills on a .550 percentage. Rauh added 11 kills of his own and Newman was once again the distributer with 32 assists.
The Cardinals will travel to Erie, PA on Saturday, Jan. 27. They will take on Baldwin Wallace University and Penn State Behrend with games slated to start at 1 p.m.
