ERIE, PA – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team were on the road on Saturday to take on Baldwin Wallace University and Penn State Behrend. The Cardinals took care of business, sweeping both opponents 3-0 and move their record to 8-0.
Fisher 3 – Yellowjackets 0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20)
The Cardinals jumped ahead quickly. With kills by Jake Baker and Ian Rauh, along with errors by the opposition, putting the team in front 10-2. Baldwin Wallace put together a run late in the first set, but Fisher took care of business, winning 25-17 thanks to a kill by Rauh. In the second it was the Yellowjackets that held a lead until a 3-0 run put Fisher in front 19-18. Points by Baker and Griffin Stella helped the team go on another run and secure the set victory, 25-21. The Cardinals were able to pull away early in the third set, leading 15-9 and they preceded to trade scores before winning 25-20 on a kill by Stella.
Stella led the way with six kills and three block assists. Baker was even with him in kills, but added three service aces. Gabe La Robardiere and Rauh, each had five kills and combined for five block assists. Gavin Newman distributed 22 assists and Trace La Robardiere led defensively with 11 digs.
Fisher 3 – Lions 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21)
The Cardinals fell behind in the first set, 7-3, but stormed back with a 7-1 stretch to jump ahead 10-8. Penn State was tough, but kills by Baker, Tyler Cohen and Stella helped the team secure a 1-0 advantage. The second set saw the two teams trade leads to start, but back-to-back kills by Rauh and a service ace by Casey Jackson put Fisher in front 20-15 and they cruised to the win. In the final frame, the Cardinals did not mess around, taking a 13-9 lead and riding it to a third set win and match sweep.
Baker secured nine kills to go with seven digs. Stella and Cohen each contributed seven kills. Rauh was second on the team with eight kills. Evan Ingerick was the lead distributor in this match, recording 37 assists and six digs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, Feb. 2 when they travel to Buffalo State to take on Wells College and University of California-Santa Cruz. Matches start at 4 p.m.
