SPRINGFIELD, OH – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team were on the road on Friday for their season opener against Wittenberg University. The Cardinals played a hard fought match and came away with the first win of the season, 3-1.
The Cardinals were back-and-forth with the Tigers in the first set, but a 7-0 run late in the frame helped the team secure a 1-0 lead. After dropping the second set, Fisher bounced back in the third. A service ace by
Ian Rauh and a kill by
Griffin Stella put the team in front 13-9 and they rode that momentum to a 25-20 win of the third set and 2-1 advantage. The third set was tightly contested, but the Cardinals pulled away thanks to a kill by
Griffin Stella and a pair of service aces by
Gavin Newman.
Jake Baker secured the win with a kill.
Stella led the way with 11 kills on a .476 hitting percentage. Rauh added double digit kills with 10 on a .500 percentage. Newman was the distributor of the team with 36 assists, while contributing four kills.
