PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were at RIT for the annual RIT Invitational. The Cardinals faced off against Oswego State and the University of Rochester and split between the two opponents. Fisher defeated the Lakers 3-0, before falling to the Yellowjackets 3-0.
 
Match One: Cardinals 3 – Lakers 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-21)
 
The Cardinals immediately took control in the first set, using kills by Delayne Young, Ana Gutman and Kristen McIntosh to jump in front 10-4. Towards the end of the set, points by Young, McIntosh and Erika Edholm pushed the advantage to 23-11, before a service ace secured the win. In the second frame, Fisher jumped ahead early thanks to six points from kills. The Lakers attempted to mount a comeback, but the Cardinals fended them off and grabbed a 15-7 advantage. Oswego came to within one point of evening the score, Fisher rallied off six straight points to secure the 2-0 advantage. In the third and final frame, a run of six unanswered in the middle of the battle helped the Cardinals secure a lead that they held onto until they wont 25-21.
 
Young tallied 12 kills, while Gutman added eight of her own. Reilly Morrow set effectively with 34 assists.
 
Match Two: Cardinals 0 – Yellowjackets 3 (21-25, 21-25, 10-25)
 
U of R jumped ahead early in the first, but the Cardinals fought back to take the 8-5 lead. The two teams began to trade points until the Yellowjackets pulled away and won the first set. The second set was also a game of runs. The opposition went in front 7-3 and the Cardinals continued to cut into the deficit. Down the stretch, Fisher used a 5-1 run to bring the deficit to 22-19, but it was not enough as U of R claimed the second frame. The third set, was close to start but long runs by the Yellowjackets put them comfortably in front and they secured the 3-0 victory.
 
Up next for the Cardinals is a trip to William Smith College to compete in the Heron Invitational. It will begin with a contest on Friday, Sept. 22 against Stevens University. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
