PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team notched their first win of the season on Wednesday, shutting out SUNY Geneseo, 1-0.
The Cardinals were beat in every major offensive category but the one that mattered most: goals. In the 22nd minute, senior Joey Avallone received a pass from senior Andrew Vannest, got past the Geneseo keeper, and then put the ball in net for his second goal with St. John Fisher.
That would be the only shot on goal all night for the Cardinals, who were out shot 17-5. Jadon Schlierf, the reigning Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week, finished the night with eight saves for his second straight shutout.
The Cardinals return to the pitch on Saturday at RIT, when they play the Tigers. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
