Women’s Volleyball Win Thriller At Home

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team were at home on Tuesday for a contest against SUNY Brockport. The two teams went back-and-forth in a thrilling game that saw the Cardinals secure their first victory of the season, 3-2.

Fisher jumped ahead in the first set, 7-2, thanks to kills by Kristen McIntosh. The Golden Eagles battled back and used four straight points to jump ahead 14-13. Kills by Kaylene Noble later in the frame put the team up 20-18, but Brockport secured the tie and later the set, 25-23.

In the second set, Fisher bounced back and once again claimed a five-point lead at 9-4. Despite being down 13-6, Brockport were unfazed and used a big run to reclaim a 17-16 advantage. The Cardinals answered back with seven unanswered points, going ahead 23-17, and it proved to be enough as they evened the match 1-1 thanks to a 25-21 set two victory. The third frame started much closer, with it being 9-9 before Fisher began to pull away. A kill by Olivia Nellis began a run that ended with a McIntosh kill put the team ahead 15-10. The two teams began trading scores and it lead to the Cardinals winning the set 25-19 and taking a 2-1 advantage.

After dropping the fourth set, the two teams went into the fifth and final frame with an important win on the line. Kills by McIntosh and Madalyn Bouton, along with an ace by Ana Gutman, help put the team up 6-3. After a couple points by the opposition, another kill by Bouton and a strike by Adeline Phillips help extend the advantage to 9-5. The Golden Eagles made another push to get to within one, but the Cardinals used kills by Gutman and McIntosh to secured the 15-12 set and match.

McIntosh impressed with 16 kills on a .414 hitting percentage. Gutman added 13 kills of her own to go along with six total blocks to lead the team with 17.5 points. Reilly Morrow was the facilitator of the attack and finished the day with 43 assists. Defensively, Kiera Hartpence led the way with 24 digs.
