BOSTON, MA – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team started the season with a Friday win, defeating Emerson College, 2-0. The Cardinals won despite being outshot, 12-9, as sophomore goalkeeper Avery Byrnes made six saves to finish with a clean sheet.
The Cardinals got on the board first, courtesy of junior midfielder Siobhan McMakin, who found the back of the net 9:46 into the game. Fisher's first goal for the season put them up 1-0.
Sophomore defender Ryann Dauksza extended Fisher's lead late in the first half, scoring at 42:22. The unassisted goal was Dauksza's first collegiate goal and first collegiate point.
The Cardinals maintained the lead through the rest of the game. It's the fifth straight season that Fisher has opened the season with a win.
Jackie Gervais, Gwen Madden, and Kyra Kenyon all had shots on goal in the win.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday at Skidmore College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
