Kirker Goal Secures Draw Against Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team were on the road for the second game of a back-to-back, taking on Skidmore College. A late goal by Jenn Kirker helped the Cardinals secure a 1-1 draw before returning home.

The two teams were held scoreless in the first half, but not for lack of trying. Fisher tallied four shots, with Siobhan McMakin put hers on target. Goalie, Avery Byrnes, was strong in net, recording four saves. As the second half proceeded, Skidmore struck first in the 58th minute. The Cardinals' offense kicked into gear and totaled nine shots in the second, with four on target.  In the 77th minute, the equalizer hit the back of the net off the foot of Kirker. A long pass into the box by Gwen Madden set up the striker to slot it past the keeper and bring the score to 1-1. Fisher had a pair of opportunities in the 83rd minute, but attempts by Jackie Gervais and Emma Spelman were both saved by the opposing goalkeeper.

Byrnes played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded seven saves. Spelman led the way with four shots, while McMakin tallied three of her own.

The Cardinals will play SUNY Brockport next for their home opener. The match will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 5 with kick off at 7 p.m.
