NCAA Tournament Preview: No. 19 Women’s Lacrosse Face No. 3 William Smith

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team has advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament and will be traveling to Geneva, NY. The team is set to take on William Smith College for the second time this season at 1pm this Saturday. The Cardinals defeated the University of Mount Union 14-3 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance. The Cardinals head into the week with a 17-2 overall record.

The Opponent

The Cardinals last saw the Herons this season on March 29th in Pittsford, NY. After the Cardinals lead 6-5 at halftime the Herons came back to win it 10-9 at the end of regulation. Mary Fiorentino recorded three goals and two assists to lead the way on the offensive end. Lilly Goodsell had nine saves on the day for a 47% save percentage. In 2021 the teams saw each other in Waterville, Maine for the Sweet Sixteen NCAA Championship round. The Cardinals defeated the Herons 10-9 and with this win Fisher advanced to the first Elite 8 appearance in team history. The Herons defeated Rhodes College Sunday the 14th, 17-1 in the second round of the NCAA tournament to advance to this upcoming weekend. William Smith holds a 19-0 overall record.

Herons Previous Game

The third-ranked Herons defeated Rhodes 17-1 in an NCAA tournament game on Boswell Field. William Smith dominated the stat sheet, finishing the game with a 34-15 edge in shots, a 21-12 in ground balls and a 15-7 edge in the draw circle. The Herons were 16-of-20 clearing the ball. With five assists in the game, Allie McGinty now has 104 for her career. She is second on William Smith's career list. With four goals, Maddie Montgomery now has 73 on the season, matching the Herons' single-season record. Montgomery is the lone player in program history to have two 70-goal seasons. The Herons have a winning streak of 19 games, and 26 straight games on Boswell Field.

Cardinal Players to Watch

Sydney Carpenter had a stand out performance in the teams game on Sunday against Mount Union. Carpenter led the way on the offensive end with three goals and four assists for seven points. She added one ground ball, one caused turnover and a team high of 11 draw controls. Fiorentino added two goals, two assists and one caused turnover to help lead the way. Tara Osterdale recorded a season high of three goals on four shots to add to the offensive success. Mykenzie Black dominated throughout the midfield with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, she added one goal. Lauren Swartz recorded a team high of four ground balls and tallied one caused turnover to help the Cardinals defense hold the Purple Raiders to three goals.
