Softball Drop Opening Game To Roadrunners

ASHLAND, VA. – The St. John Fisher University softball team competed in the first round of NCAA Regionals hosted by Randolph Macon College. The Cardinals took on Ramapo College and despite an early lead, they fell by a final score of 3-2.

After Amalia DeMartino doubled to center field and moved to third a batter later, Kelly Cournoyer brought her home with a single to left field. The Roadrunners scored their three runs in the bottom of the third after a throwing error by the Cardinals. In the top of the fourth, Fisher earned a run back starting with a single by Mari Spitz. DeMartino and Allie Klonowski each tallied singles of their own to load the bases and force a pitching change. Cournoyer came to bat and registered another RBI with a single, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, the team did not put across the tying run and dropped their first game.

Jess Patterson pitched a good game, tossing 6.0 innings of three run ball, giving up just one hit, while striking out seven batters. DeMartino batted 2-for-2 with a run scored and walk. Cournoyer finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The Cardinals will take on the host Yellowjackets on Friday, May 19 with a start time of 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
