No. 19 Women’s Lacrosse Advance to Sweet Sixteen With 2nd Round Win Over Mount Union

ALLIANCE, OH - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against the University of Mount Union on Sunday afternoon in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. After dominating in all four quarters, the Cardinals won by a 14-3 final score. The Cardinals advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

The Purple Raiders recorded the first goal of the match up three minutes in. Maddie Lowney controlled the next draw control to get a Cardinals offensive possession. Sydney Carpenter finds Mary Fiorentino cutting through the eight, she puts it away to tie it up at one a piece. Tara Osterdale with the next Fisher goal, assisted by Carpenter, gives Fisher their first lead, 2-1. With 5:38 to go in the first. Fiorentino gets her second of the day, assisted by Carpenter, her third assist, Fisher goes up 3-1 heading into the second quarter.

To start out the second, Hanna Kumpf gets put on the eight for Fisher's first free position attempt of the afternoon. Kumpf finds the back of the net and makes it 4-1. The Cardinals fifth straight goal comes from Osterdale, assisted by Carpenter. With 2:47 to go until half, Carpenter gets her 5th point and first goal of the day on a free position shot, Cardinals lead at half 6-1.

As the second half began, Carpenter puts Fisher up 7-1, 1:30 into the third quarter. Kaley Griffin with the defensive caused turnover gets it to the offense for another early scoring opportunity. Fiorentino finds Tara Osterdale for her third goal of the day, Cardinals up 8-1. Another caused turnover by Griffin leads to a Cardinals goal. This time Courtney O'Dea finds the back of the net off an assist from Fiorentino. The Purple Raiders tally their second goal to bring the score to 9-2. With 2:37 left in the third, Carpenter goes behind the back and gets her seventh point of the day. Heading into the fourth quarter, Fisher is up 11-2. Mykenzie Black takes it hard to cage and records her first goal of the day to bring Fisher up by 10. Mount Union answers back to make it 12-3. Kayla Schwatz records back-to-back goals and secures a 14-3 Cardinals victory.

Carpenter ended the day with three goals, four assists, one ground ball, one caused turnover and 11 draw controls. Fiorentino finished with two goals, two assists and one caused turnover. Osterdale recorded three goals for the Cardinals. Black ended with three ground balls, three caused turnovers, two draw control and one goal. On defense, Lauren Swartz recorded four ground balls and one caused turnover.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will compete against William Smith in the Sweet Sixteen next weekend.
