GENEVA, NY. - The St. John Fisher University no. 19 women's lacrosse team competed against no. 3 William Smith College in Geneva, NY on Saturday afternoon in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals took defeat by a 6-5 final score. The Cardinals finish the season with a 17-3 overall record.
The Herons got a quick start and tallied two straight goals to go up 2-0 with four minutes to go in the first quarter. With 31 seconds to go in the first, Sydney Carpenter took a hard drive to cage and found the back of the net to make it 2-1, Fisher trailing. As the second quarter began, the Cardinals took advantage of a Heron turnover and tied it up at two a piece, Mary Fiorentino with the tally. At the 8:40 minute mark, Carpenter with a defensive caused turnover got it into the Fisher offensive end for another scoring opportunity. Cara Landry took it hard and gave Fisher their first lead of the day, 3-2. Lilly Goodsell held strong in cage and recorded a save at the end of the second to bring Fisher into halftime leading 3-2.
To start out the third, the Cardinals capitalized on their first shot of the second half. At the 7:57 minute mark, Fiorentino found Mykenzie Black who recorded her first tally of the day and brought Fisher up 4-2. The Herons answered back with two straight goals to tie it up at 4-4 heading into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals had a free position attempt to start the fourth but couldn't quite finish, William Smith took advantage and gained the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 5-4. With 3:35 to go in regulation, Carpenter converted on a free position shot to get her second goal of the day and tie it back up at 5-5. Less than a minute later, the Herons tallied one to lead 6-5. William Smith controlled the next draw and ran out the clock. The Cardinals came up short with a 6-5 final score.
