PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University baseball team were at home on Saturday, hosting Russell Sage College for the Empire 8 Baseball Championship final. A consistent defense and pitching helped push the Cardinals to a 5-1 victory, securing the three-peat.
Getting the game going in the bottom of the first,
Noah Campanelli tripled to left center, grabbing his 76
th hit of the season and setting a new Fisher record for most hits in a single season. Next up, Nicholas Lemire singled to right field, bringing home Campanelli, making the score 1-0. In the bottom of the second,
Jake Crantz singled up the middle, with
Ben Lavery scoring. A few innings later, in the bottom of the fifth,
Ethan Perry singled to left field, with
Brian Norsen scoring. The bottom of the eighth saw Campanelli triple again, this time to right field, driving
Jack Migliore home. Immediately after, Lemire singled to left field, Campanelli scoring. After nine innings, the Cardinals won 5-1.
Starting for Fisher, Ben Huckans pitched the first 6.0 innings, facing 24 batters and striking out five. Allowing only four hits and one run, Huckans collected the win, moving to an overall record of 4-1. Coming in to pitch for the final 3.0 innings,
Russell Dunlap faced nine batters, striking out two, and giving up no walks, hits, or runs. With his performance, Dunlap collects his second save of the season.
The Cardinals will see where they will travel too in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, May 15. The selection show is set to begin at 12 p.m.
