PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University baseball team continued in the Empire 8 Championships, hosting Utica University for game four. A consistent offense helped push the Cardinals to an 11-6 victory. With today's result, the Cardinals advance to the Empire 8 Championship final.
Starting the game trailing,
Ethan Perry singled up the middle, in the bottom of the second, with
Ben Lavery scoring and tying the game, 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Perry doubled to right field, bringing home
Jake Crantz. Later in the inning,
Nick Lemire singled to left field, with Perry scoring. Right after,
Noah Campanelli scored on a wild pitch, Fisher taking the lead, 4-3.
Keeping the scoring going in the bottom of the fifth,
Jack Migliore walked with the bases loaded, allowing Lavery to score. Next up, Campanelli grounded out to second base, with Crantz scoring. Immediately after Lemire singled up the middle, bringing two runners home and giving the team an 8-6 advantage.
The Cardinals saw their next runs in the bottom of the seventh, with
James Murphy singling to left field, Campanelli scoring. Next up to bat, Norsen flew out to center field, scoring Lemire. Fisher picked up their final run in the bottom of the eighth, with Crantz scoring from a sacrifice fly by Migliore. After nine innings, the Cardinals won, 11-6.
Starting for Fisher,
Connor McHugh pitched the first 4.1 innings. McHugh faced 24 batters, striking out two, walking three, and allowing five hits and six runs. Up next,
Logan Persse pitched 0.2 innings. Facing two batters, Persse collected the win. Closing for the Cardinals,
Hunter Walsh pitched the final 4.0 innings, facing 14 batters, striking out five, and only allowing one hit to collect his second save of the season.
Up next, Fisher hosts the championship game of the Empire 8 Championship. The Cardinals will face Russell Sage College who defeated Houghton University and Utica University to advance. The matchup will take place at 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, with game two starting at 3:30pm if necessary.
