ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team were at Alfred University on Thursday for the start of the Empire 8 Softball Championship tournament. The Cardinals kicked off the double-elimination format with a game against Russell Sage College. After scoring eight in the first inning, Fisher came away with a 9-1 run-rule win.
Madi Rose began the game with a single and stolen base, before
Tori LoPresto singled as well. Claire Boegel got a hit, but after a throwing error, her and LoPresto advance to scoring position, while Rose scored the opening run.
Amalia DeMartino reached on an error as well that also scored LoPresto. That was followed up by back-to-back singles by
Allie Klonowski and
Kelly Cournoyer, scoring three runs. A few batters later, LoPresto came to bat again, this time with the bases loaded. She was hit by a pitch to bring a run home. Boegel singled to right field and scored two runs to push the lead to 8-0 after one inning.
After that, the pitching combination of
Jess Patterson and
Ainsley Evanetski secured the victory. Patterson threw 3.0 perfect innings, striking out four. Evanetski came in and tossed 2.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one. Boegel finished the day 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cournoyer recorded three RBI of her own whil hitting 2-for-3.
The Cardinals will take on the host school and no. 1 seed Alfred University on May 12. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
