ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team, continued their journey to an Empire 8 title when they took on the no. 1 seed Alfred University to open up day two of the tournament. After a pitchers dual, the Cardinals were able to knock off the Saxons in extra innings to solidify their place in the finals.
Neither team scored until the fourth inning. With
Amalia DeMartino in scoring position,
Kelly Cournoyer brought her home with a single to center field. Alfred answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to even the game at 1-1. Neither team scored again until Fisher was able to string together base knocks in the extra innings. As the eighth began,
Clare Boegel ignited the team with a two-out single through the right side.
Mari Spitz followed with a double to right-center and was pinch-ran for by
Gracie Curella. DeMartino came to bat and with a single, two runs came home. It proved to be enough as Fisher held on for the 3-1 victory.
Jess Patterson drew the start and pitched 5.0 innings of three hit, one run ball. She walked five and struck out three.
Ainsley Evanetski came into the game and tossed a scoreless 3.0 innings were she gave up just three hits and struck out three.
Up next for the Cardinals is a matchup against Russell Sage College in the finals. The first game will take place on Saturday, May 13 at 12p.m. and if necessary, game two will follow.
