No. 24 Women’s Lacrosse Secures First Empire 8 Win Against Pioneers

UTICA, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against Utica University on the road on Saturday afternoon. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals won by a 16-5 final score. Fisher now holds a 7-2 overall record and is 1-0 in conference play. The Pioneers are now 4-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Fisher got off to a quick start to begin the first quarter. The Cardinals recorded the first goal of the game in under 30 seconds. Sydney Carpenter secured the draw control and took it to cage herself to get the tally. Carpenter with the next draw control, gets it to the offensive end where Hanna Kumpf records a goal unassisted, Fisher leads 2-0. Carpenter gets her third draw control in a row to give Fisher yet another scoring opportunity. This time it's Mary Fiorentino who finds a cutting Carpenter for her second of the night. Fisher scoring three goals in the first 2:30 of the game leads to a Utica timeout. Out of the timeout, Courtney O'Dea gets the draw and brings it safety to the offensive end. Kumpf gets her second of the day assisted by Carpenter, Fisher takes an early 4-0 lead. At the 7:18 mark, Kumpf puts it away to get a first quarter hat trick. The Cardinals record three more goals in the first quarter to head into the second leading 8-0. Mykenzie Black finishes out the first half scoring with a buzzer beater, assisted by Fiorentino to bring the score to 10-2 heading into halftime.

As the second half began, Fisher wasted no time getting on the board. Carpenter found Kumpf cutting through the eight for her fourth goal of the day. Utica puts another away to bring the score to 11-3. With four minutes to go in the third, Fisher got the ball around and looked for the right scoring opportunity. Fiorentino finds Black for a hat trick and brings their leads up by 11. Shannon Foster picks of a defensive ground ball and clear it to the offense. Finishing out the third quarter scoring is Carpenter from Black. Heading into the fourth Fisher leads 13-3. With 10:05 in regulation Carpenter takes it hard to cage and records he fourth of the day. Utica converts on a free position shot to bring the score to 14-5. As time runs out, the Cardinals record the final two goals of the game and win by a 16-5 final score.

Carpenter leading in multiple categories for her team, on the offensive end with five goals and two assists for seven points. She recorded 10 draw controls, four ground balls and one caused turnover. Fiorentino finished the day with two goals and three assists for five points, and added two ground balls and one caused turnover. Kumpf with four goals, two ground balls and one caused turnover.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will host an Empire 8 match up against Alfred University on Wednesday April 12th at 4pm.
