PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against Alfred University at home on Wednesday afternoon. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals won by a 25-3 final score. The Cardinals had 12 different goal scorers throughout the game, and recorded 19 assists. Fisher now holds an 8-2 overall record and is 2-0 in conference play. The Saxon's are now 1-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Sydney Carpenter secured the first draw of the match up and brought it into the offensive end for Fisher's first scoring opportunity. Wasting no time, Carpenter fed the ball to a cutting Tara Osterdale who put it away, putting Fisher up 1-0 just 38 seconds in. Osterdale tallied the second goal for Fisher and her second just two minutes later. Courtney O'Dea with a perfect pass to Mary Fiorentino cutting through the eight makes it 4-0, four minutes into the game. Alfred calls a time out at the 10:55 mark. Fisher capitalizes on the next scoring opportunity with Hanna Kumpf finding Osterdale for a first quarter hat trick and brining Fisher up 5-0. The Cardinals go on to score five more goals in the first quarter and make it 10-0 heading into the second.
Farrah Zalla converts on a free position shot to start out the second, and one minute later records another, assisted by Sydney Closinski, Fisher leads 12-0. The Saxon's get on the board with 7:31 remaining in the second quarter. With 4:51 until half time, Closinski nets her first goal of the season, assisted by Landry, 14-1 Fisher is up. Carpenter pressures during the Saxon's clear attempt causes a turnover, picking up the loose ball, taking it to cage one on one with the keeper and puts it away. The Cardinals head into halftime leading 16-1.
To start out the third quarter, Hanna Kumpf gets a hat trick, assisted by Fiorentino, her third assist of the day. The Saxon's put away another goal on a free position shot. The Cardinals score two quick goals to make it 19-2 with 6:42 remaining until the fourth. 30 seconds into the fourth, Megan McGrath gets her first goal of the season, assisted by Closinski. With 9:41 remaining in regulation, the Saxon's get their third goal of the game on a free position shot. Dharma Makarowski and Zalla each record a goal as time ticks down to bring it to 24-3. Emma Biel finishes out the scoring for Fisher, as she gets her first goal of the season. The Cardinals win by a 25-3 final score at the end of regulation.
O'Dea led the way on the offensive end, with four goals and two assists for six points, adding two ground balls. Osterdale finished with three goals, two assists, and one caused turnover. Kumpf ended the day with three goals, two assists, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Stewart on the defensive end recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel down the road and compete against Nazareth College on Saturday, April 15. The Empire 8 match up is set for 12pm.
