Cardinals Drop Double Header At Alfred

ALFRED, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's softball team (12-10, 1-3 Empire 8) could not find enough answers Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader against the Alfred University Saxons (6-8-1, 3-1 Empire 8). With the loss, the Cardinals falter to 1-3 in Empire 8 play.

Saxons 5, Cardinals 4

In the top of the first, Madi Rose would pop out, ending her streak at five of reaching base to open the game. Looking to score early, Tori LoPresto, the next batter would single to left before Allie Klonowski would reach on a fielder's choice, but the inning would end on a weak flyout.

In response, the Saxons would use a single and walk to start the bottom of the frame, but starter Ainsley Evanetski would escape the jam when catcher Mari Spitz would throw out a runner trying to steal third.

In the fourth, Klonowski and Amalia DeMartino worked a walk before player of the week to watch, Clare Boegel drilled a double to left field to plate the two runners, giving Fisher the early 2-0 lead.

But the Saxons would break through in the bottom of the fourth, using a single and two doubles to tie the contest at 2-2.

After a scoreless fifth, the Cardinals would threaten in the sixth when DeMartino would be hit by a pitch and Kelly Cournoyer would reach on a bunt single to put two on and none out. But the rally would not result in any runs for Fisher, as the Saxons induced a fielders choice and two pop ups.

With the game knotted at 2-2, Spitz drilled a two-run home run to put the Cardinals up 4-2. The lead would be short lived, as Alfred would bring in three in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off the Cardinals in 5-4 fashion.

A. Evanetski would go 6.1, giving up 10 hits for the second straight appearance, allowing five runs and walking two while striking out one.

Saxons 4, Cardinals 3

Game two was a pitcher's duel for most of the game, with Cassidy Ormond returning to the mound for a second straight day and pitching 7.2 innings. The Cardinals would score in the top of the fourth when Maddie Donlin singled up the middle bringing Maddie Nadrich to the plate.

But once again, Alfred would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. With this score still 1-1, Alfred tacked on two more runs to move the score to 3-1. The Cardinals would not go down quietly, using a groundout from LoPresto to move the score to 3-2 and a single from DeMartino to tie the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Saxons would rely on a two-run double to bring in the winning run, walking off the Cardinals for the second straight game.

The Cardinals will return to the field next Saturday, April 15, for a doubleheader at Russell Sage College, with the first pitch of the first game coming at 3:30 p.m.
