ALBANY, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team was on the road on Saturday to take on Empire 8 opponent, Russell Sage College. The Cardinals were able to take control in both games and come away with a sweep. Pitching impressed, as the two starting pitchers recorded complete game shutouts. Fisher now have a 14-10 record on the year.
Game One: Cardinals 9 – Gators 0
The scoring got started early for the Cardinals.
Madi Rose walked and then stole second.
Tori LoPresto followed by reaching on a fielders choice before stealing second herself, putting two runners in scoring position.
Mari Spitz hit the ball into the outfield for a sacrifice fly to score Rose and then an error by the Gators scored LoPresto and allowed
Amalia DeMartino to reach base, who later circled the bases to make the score 3-0 after one.
As the game continued, the Cardinals added to their lead. In the third inning,
Kelly Cournoyer scored Spitz on a sacrifice fly. The next inning,
Cassidy Evanetski doubled and later scored on a LoPresto single. LoPresto scored herself on a Spitz double. Fisher scored three more in the fifth, started with an opposition error to bring in
Allie Klonowski. Cournoyer crossed home plate on a Evanetski single and later in the inning,
Maddie Donlin scored on another LoPresto hit.
Jess Patterson pitched the complete 5.0 game, allowing just three hits, allowing no runs and striking out seven. LoPresto, Spitz and Evanetski all had multi-hit games, with LoPresto, Spitz and Cournoyer all collecting two RBI as well.
Game Two: Cardinals 2 – Gators 0
In the second game of the day, two runs was enough to claim the victory. In the first inning a pair of errors led to Rose scoring and giving the team the lead. In the third, Rose was once again the run that crossed home plate. After singling, Rose stole second and advance to third on a ground out. Spitz was able to bring her home on a single and it proved to be the final run of the day for either team.
Cassidy Ormond did not need any more run support, pitching a 7.0 complete game shut out. She allowed just three hits and one walk, while striking out four batters.
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday, April 16 as they continue their road trip traveling to Utica University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
