No. 24 Women’s Lacrosse Holds On To Defeat The Knights On The Road

GENESEO, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against SUNY Geneseo on the road on Thursday afternoon. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals won by an 11-9 final score. Fisher now holds a 6-2 overall record, while the Knights move to 7-3 on the season.

To get the scoring started for the Cardinals, two minutes in, Courtney O'Dea gets on the board, assisted by Sydney Carpenter. Fisher recorded the next draw and got it into the offensive end. Looking for the right scoring opportunity, O'Dea found a cutting Mary Fiorentino for her first of the day. Sydney Carpenter controlled the next draw and quickly got it down the field. She found Hanna Kumpf who put it away, giving Fisher a 3-0 early lead. Fisher scored three goals in just 2 minutes and 30 seconds of play. Holding strong on the defensive end, Mykenzie Black picked up a ground ball and cleared it to the offensive end herself. Cara Landry fed the ball to Farrah Zalla who recorded a goal, pushing the Fisher lead to 4-0. With just 33 seconds left in the first, O'Dea finds Fiorentino for her second of the day, Fisher heads into the second quarter leading 5-0.

The Knights got on the board two minutes into the second quarter, cutting the Fisher lead to 5-1. 9:13 to go until half, and right out of a timeout, Carpenter cuts hard and O'Dea gets her the ball to make it 6-1. With seven seconds to go, Shannon Foster causes a Knights turnover and picks up the loose ball. Fiorentino transitioned the ball down the field, and finds Landry who puts it away right as time runs out. The Cardinals head into halftime leading 7-2.

Geneseo came out of halftime and recorded the first goal, bringing the score to 7-3 Fisher leads. Shortly after, the Cardinals controlled the draw and the next offensive possession. O'Dea took advantage and put it away to bring Fisher back up by five. The Knights tallied the next two goals to cut the Fisher lead to three. With 2:28 left in the third quarter, O'Dea converts on a free position shot and gets a hat trick on the day, Cardinals lead 9-5. As the third was closing out, Kumpf picks up the draw control and takes it all the way to cage with eight seconds on the clock to bring the Cardinals lead to 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Geneseo tallies the next two goals, both off of free position shots to bring the deficit to just two with 6:46 to go in regulation. Maddie Lowney playing solid defense, picks up a ground ball and gets to back into the offensive end. Fiorentino finds O'Dea cutting through the eight meter to record her fourth of the night and brings the score to 11-8. With a minute left, the Knights record the final goal of the match up. As time ran out, Fisher came out on top by an 11-9 final score.

O'Dea with a stand out performance on the offensive end, leading the team with four goals, three assists for seven points on the day. She added one ground ball and one caused turnover. Fiorentino finished with two goals and two assists to contribute heavily to the offensive success. On the defensive end, Foster recorded three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Lowney lead with four ground balls throughout the match up and added one caused turnover.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Utica, NY and compete against Utica University on Saturday for their first Empire 8 match up of the season. The game is set for 1pm.
