Weekly Preview: No. 24 Women’s Lacrosse Set To Compete on the Road Against SUNY Geneseo & Utica University

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team will start the week off traveling to SUNY Geneseo on Thursday April 6, the game is set for 4pm. On Saturday, April 8 the team will compete in their first Empire 8 conference game against Utica University at 1pm in Utica, NY. The Cardinals head into the week ranked No. 24 in the IWLCA Poll and No. 17 in the USA Magazine Poll, the team holds a 5-2 overall record.

Last Match-Ups

The Cardinals have played against the Knights every year since 2006 for an out of conference match up. Fisher has won nine games throughout the game series, but lost the most recent during the 2022 season. During the last match up, the two teams went into halftime tied at seven a piece. In the third quarter, the Knights held Fisher scoreless, which ultimately led to Geneseo coming out on top. The Cardinals look to come back from last year loss and reclaim victory. The Knights head into the week with a 6-2 record.

Fisher will compete against Utica University on Saturday for their first Empire 8 game of the season. The Cardinals have competed against Utica every year since 2006, and have won 15 of the match ups. In 2022 during the most recent game, the Cardinals outscored the Pioneers in every quarter. At the end of regulation Fisher won by a score of 16-4. Fisher returns six of the seven goal scorers from last year's game. The team is on a 12 game win streak against the Pioneers and look to make it 13 this Saturday. Utica heads into the week with a 4-4 overall record and are 0-1 in conference play.

Players to Watch

Last week in the team match up against No. 3 William Smith College, Mary Fiorentino led the Cardinals in goals and points. She finished the day with a season high of three goals, two assists for a high of five points. Fiorentino went 3-for-3 on her shots for a 100% shooting percentage. She also added three ground balls during the match up.

Sydney Carpenter led throughout the midfield with a team high of three caused turnovers and two ground balls. She added one goal and one assist on the offensive end. Lilly Goodsell held strong in cage against the Herons, she faced a season high of 25 shots. Goodsell recorded nine saves and allowed just 10, for a .474 save percentage.
