CANTON, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against No. 9 St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon. At the end of regulation, the Saints came out on top by a 20-11 final score. The Cardinals move to 1-8 overall and St. Lawrence jumps to 8-1.
The Saints got a quick start to the first quarter and went up 2-0 one minute in. Jacob Gallina got the first goal for the Cardinals, assisted by Andrew Corbin to cut the Saints lead in half. St. Lawrence went on a bit of a run and recorded four unanswered goals. With 2:59 left in the first, Lane Edinger found the back of the net assisted by Braeden McNeill. Heading into the second quarter, the Saints led 7-2. Ben Hammond secured a big save four minutes into the second to give the offense an opportunity to capitalize on the other end. Griffin Dautrich found Samual Miller to bring the score to 9-3. 7:20 until half, McNeill gets his first of the day, assisted by Edinger, closing the deficit to 10-4. Heading into halftime, the Saints lead 11-4.
The first five minutes of the second half were a back and forth defensive battle between the teams. The Saints got on the board to start and added three quick to bring the score to 15-4. With 5:35 to go in the third, Brett Seaman takes it hard to cage and gets on the board to end the Saints run. St. Lawrence takes back momentum once again and goes up 18-5. With four seconds left in the third, Colin Blakeslee tallies one to head into the fourth down 18-6. With 9:12 left in regulation, Fisher capitalizes on an extra man opportunity, a shot and goal by Evan Pashalides, assisted by Miller. Hunter Gentry makes two huge back to back saves with seven minutes left to secure a Fisher possession, Miller takes it to cage and makes it 19-8. Logan Grom secures the next face off. Less than a minute after Millers goal, he tallies another assisted by Dautrich, Fisher cuts the deficit to 10. Zach Mitrano comes up big on the defensive end with a caused turnover and picks up the ground ball, clearing it successfully to the offense. Seaman to Matthew Kemmis for a goal to make that three in a row for Fisher. Once again the Cardinals draw an extra man opportunity and convert, Ethan Kesselring from Timmy Salit. The Saints net one last goal with 22 seconds left in regulation to win by a final score of 20-11.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Keuka, NY and compete against Keuka College for an Empire 8 match up on Wednesday, April 5th at 7pm.
