PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against No. 10 Union College on Wednesday night for an out of conference match up. After a hard fought battle, Fisher fell just short by a 9-8 final score. The Cardinals now hold a 5-9 overall record and are 5-0 in conference play. Union is now 8-5 overall on the season.
As the first quarter began, Ben Hammond came out with his first save of the night 30 seconds in to get Fisher a possession. At 13:01, the Cardinals went man-up and converted, Mathew Kemmis got the first goal of the night, assisted by Timmy Salit. The Dutchmen wasted no time, and answered right back seven seconds later to tie it at one a piece. Union went on to score two straight goals in the first to bring the score to 3-1. Hammond made two big saves to hold on early in the second, but Union found the back of the net with 7:10 left in the second. With 3:24 to go until halftime, Fisher creates a man-up opportunity and converts, Samuel Miller gets the tally off an assist from Brett Seaman to make it 4-2. The teams head into halftime with a 4-2 score, Dutchmen lead.
To get the third quarter started, Union put one away less than a minute in. Fisher controlling the next face-off, get a much needed scoring opportunity. Seaman takes it hard to cage and finds the back of the net to make it 5-3, Cardinals trail. Kemmis picks up a loose ball off the face-off and settles it into the offensive end. The Cardinals work the ball around, Matt Slowinski finds Colin Blakeslee for his first of the day and cut the Cardinals deficit to one. The Fisher defense holding strong, causing the Dutchmen to have a shot clock violation. With 8:13 left in the third, Lane Edinger tallies one assisted by Salit to tie the game up at 5-5. Union puts away two quick goals to go back up by two, 7-5 Fisher's down. Three minutes to go in the third, and the Cardinals cause a Union failed clear. Getting it down to the offensive end, Fisher puts one away fast, Seaman with his second of the day makes it 7-6 as the third came to an end.
Capitalizing on a Dutchmen turnover again, the Cardinals get the first goal of the fourth to tie it back up at 7-7, Tyler Edinger with the goal, Sailt with his third assist. With 7:04 left in the fourth, the Cardinals go man-up. Salit finds Kemmis to give Fisher their first lead of the night, 8-7. Union answers back to tie it at eight a piece. With the final shot and goal of the game, the Dutchmen win by a 9-8 final score.
Seaman finished the day with two goals and one assist to lead the offense. Salit recorded four assists and five ground balls. Kemmis ended with two goals and four ground balls. Hammond recorded 12 saves and nine goals allowed for a .57 save percentage on the night, adding three ground balls.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Troy, NY, and compete against Russell Sage College. The Empire 8 match up is set for Saturday, April 22nd at 1pm.
