Softball Begins week with Sweep over SUNY Fredonia

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's softball team (18-10, 5-3 Empire 8) used a combination of strong pitching performances and deep offense to back a sweep over SUNY Fredonia (2-20) Tuesday afternoon.

Cardinals 9, Devils 0 (in 5)

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Cardinals offense got on the board in the bottom of the first. Madi Rose singled and quickly advanced to third, before Clare Boegel grounded out to score Rose.

The lead stretched in the bottom of the second, when Rose is credited with an RBI on a fielder's choice, moving the score to 2-0. The lead doubled from there on a combination of Boegel reaching first on an error and a throwing error to score Cassidy Evanteski.

After another hitless inning in the top of the third, Kelly Cournoyer singled through the left side to score Allie Klonowski, the fifth run of the Cardinals afternoon.

While Fredonia escaped the bottom of the fourth without allowing a run, Mari Spitz homered to open the bottom of the sixth before Cournoyer struck a three run home run, giving the Cardinals the 9-0 victory.

Empire 8 pitcher of the week, Jess Patterson surrendered just two hits and two walks while striking out six across the 5.0 innings pitched.

Cardinals 10, Devils 0 (in 5)

The offense continued to overwhelm the Devils, as player of the week to watch, Amalia DeMartino doubled to left to plate two runs in the top of the first. Cournoyer recorded her fifth RBI of the day in the first, using a single to left field to score Klonowski.

Relentlessly, an RBI double from Maddie Donlin was followed up by another two-run double from DeMartino, moving the score to 6-0.

The Cardinals recorded four more runs, using four Blue Devil errors to back the nine hit attack.
Cassidy Ormond pitched 4.0 innings, surrendering just two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Up next for the Cardinals is a double header against Houghton University on Friday, April 21. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
