PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University Softball team was at home on Friday for a double header against conference opponent, Houghton University. It was a tale of two games, as the Cardinals secured the 4-1 victory in the first, before hammering the Highlanders for a 12-0 win in game two. With the wins, Fisher moves to 20-10 on the year and 7-3 in Empire 8 play.
Game One: Cardinals 4 – Highlanders 1
Houghton got their run in the first inning of the game, but
Jess Patterson settled in to go the full 7.0 innings, allowing the one run off of four hits, five walks and striking out five. The Cardinals answered immediately, thanks to
Madi Rose continuing to use her lead off abilities to single up the middle. After Rose stole second,
Tori LoPresto doubled to left to drive in the run and even the game at 1-1.
Fisher claimed the lead in the third, after
Allie Klonowski doubled to left center to score LoPresto, who singled to open the frame. In the fourth, the Cardinals added to the lead thanks to Rose singling again and scoring
Maddie Donlin. The final run came in the sixth inning.
Kelly Cournoyer doubled to start, and crossed home plate thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Cassidy Evanetski.
Rose, LoPresto and Donlin had multi-hit games, while scoring a run each.
Game Two: Cardinals 12 – Highlanders 0
Fisher used an insane second inning to race past Houghton in game two. After taking the lead in the first inning thanks to
Mari Spitz singled to score LoPresto, the Cardinals erupted for ten runs in the second.
The frame started with
Amalia DeMartino and Klownowski singling. Cournoyer added a base hit of her own to score DeMartino, making the score 2-0. Donlin brought two runs in after a knock to left field. Evanetski made the score 5-0 with a single through the right side and with the bases loaded, Spitz singled up the middle to move the runners over and adding another score to the board. After a DeMartino walk to bring in the seventh run of the day and a passed ball brought in another, Klonowski homered to right center to bring the Cardinal lead to 11-0. The team scored ten runs on nine hits and one error by the Highlanders.
The team added another run in the third, thanks to
Leah Fron singling to right field to score
Emma MacLachlan. The pitching held firm through out the game, with
Ainsley Evanetski recording the win after going 4.0 innings and striking out six in a scoreless outing.
Maddie Herdlein took the ball for the final frame and closed out the game.
The Cardinals are scheduled to host Nazareth College on Wednesday, April 26 for a rivalry double-header. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the Softball Complex.
