Men’s Lacrosse Dominates in Second Half to Secure A Victory Over The Hawks

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon for an Empire 8 match-up. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals came out on top by a 22-9 final score. Fisher now holds a 5-8 overall record and are 5-0 in conference play. The Hawk's fall to 5-4 on the season and are 3-2 in conference play.

The Cardinals got a quick start, and recorded the first goal of the match up just 34 seconds in, Samuel Miller gets the tally unassisted. Matt Slowinski capitalizes on the next Fisher offensive possession to bring the team up 2-0. With strong defensive on display, there was seven minutes of no scoring for either team throughout the first. With 4:32 to go, the Hawks end the scoring drought, get on the board, and make it 2-1, Fisher leads. The Hawks turn the ball over with 1:46 to go, Slowinski finds Matthew Kemmis who gets his first of the day. Heading into the second quarter, Fisher leads 3-1.

Aiden Wheeler with a caused turnover on the defensive end leads to a fast transition and again Slowinski finds Kemmis for a goal, 4-1 Cardinals up. With 11 minutes until half, Miller finds Ethan Kesselring through traffic who puts it away to bring the Fisher lead up by four. Hartwick scores two quick back-to-back goals to bring the score to 5-3. As the first half clock winds down, Kesselring converts on a man up play and Tyler Edinger finds Brady Mason who puts it away. At halftime, the Cardinals lead 7-3.

The Hawks come out of halftime and are first to get on the board with a goal just 37 seconds into play. The Cardinals waste no time answering back. Logan Grom with the next face off win gets it safely into the offensive end. Kemmis puts one away and gets a hat trick on the day, assisted by Timmy Salit. Just 45 seconds later, Mason gets it to Colin Blakeslee for his first of the day and bring the Cardinals up 9-4. With 8:42 left in the third, Zach Mitrano picks up a loose ball on the defensive end, runs it down and fires it at cage from a far range and gets the goal, 11-5 Fisher leads. Salit, Mason, Kesselring and Kemmis all tally one each throughout the third to bring the Cardinals into the fourth leading 15-7.

Fisher starts out the fourth man-up and have possession of the ball. Working it around for the right opportunity, Salit gets it to Kemmis for his fifth goal of the day. Grom picks up the next face-off and Edinger takes it hard to cage to bring the Cardinals up by 10. The Hawk's answer back with the next two goals making it 17-9. Fisher goes on to score five straight goals and the final five of the game. At the end of regulation Fisher wins by a 22-9 final score.

Kemmis ends the day leading in goals with five, adding one ground ball. Mason finished with four goals, two assists for six points, adding three ground balls. Salit recorded two goals and four assists for six points, tallying three ground balls. Ben Hammond held strong in cage with 10 saves and nine goals allowed for a .526 save percentage.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Schenectady, NY, and compete against Union College. The out of conference match up is set for Wednesday, April 19th at 5pm.
