NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against Christopher Newport University on Wednesday on the road. After a hard fought battle against the No. 2 team in the country, the Cardinals fell just short by a final score of 16-12. Fisher now holds a 0-2 record, while the Captains are 5-0 on the season.
Timmy Salit got the scoring started for the match up, at the 12:13 minute mark. Brady Mason tallied a goal, assisted by Salit, right behind was Samuel Miller to net one. These tallies brought the score to 3-1, getting the Cardinals an early two-point lead with seven minutes left in the first quarter. As the second quarter began, Logan Grom got a quick face-off win, getting the ball to the offensive end where Matthew Kemmis recorded two unassisted goals 35 seconds apart to give Fisher a 5-4 lead. The Captains went on a bit of a run and took the lead, bringing the score to 8-5 with 6 minutes left until halftime. Salit ended the Captains run two minutes later, assisted by Miller. The teams went into halftime with a score of 9-6, Captains lead.
As the third quarter began, Kemmis got Fisher on the board first, assisted by Miller. Salit gets his third of the night, to bring the Cardinals deficit to two with 11 minutes to go in the third. The Captains recorded the next four goals to bring the score to 14-8 heading into the fourth. The teams held scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Mason ends to scoring drought getting his second of the night with a man-up goal, assisted by Salit. Miller tallies his second of the night, bringing the score to 14-10 with 8:15 left in regulation. The Captain's bring their lead up by six with 3:38 to go. Miller tallied the last two goals of the game, getting his fourth of the night, a team high, but time ran out. The Captains won by a final score of 16-12.
Leading the way on the offensive end, Miller ended the night with four goals and two assists, and recorded one ground ball. Salit recorded three goals, three assists, and two ground balls. Kemmis tallied three goals, one assist and two ground balls. On the defensive end, Jack Cornell led the way with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. LSM Joe Urlacher led the team in ground balls with four on the night.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will be competing against Muhlenburg College on Saturday March 11 at 12pm. This match up will be held in Sparks, MD at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters.
