Men’s Lacrosse Takes Defeat In Double OT Against Mules

SPARKS, MD - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against Muhlenberg College at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, MD on Saturday. After battling in double overtime, the Cardinals fell short by a final score of 10-9. Fisher now holds a 0-3 overall record, while the Mules stand at 4-2.

The first quarter began and Ben Hammond came right out and had three saves on the first three shots on goal of the game. Hammond holding strong in cage allowed Fisher to tally the first goal of the game at the 9:59 minute mark by Matthew Kemmis assisted by Ethan Kesselring. The Mules answered back and tied the game up at one a piece. With 3:38 to go, Fisher took a time out. Coming out of the timeout, Samuel Miller took it hard the goal and got his first of the day to bring the Cardinals up 2-1 going into the second. Muhlenberg recorded a quick goal to start the second quarter, but Fisher answered right back with two goals. Griffin Dautrich tallied one unassisted and Brady Mason got his first off an assist by Owen Bogue to go up by two with 7:51 to go. Brett Seaman took advantage of a Mule failed clear and turnover to put Fisher on top 5-3 heading into halftime.

Coming out if half, just 22 seconds in Matthew Kemmis recorded his second of the day off an assist by Timmy Salit bringing the score to 6-3, Cardinals lead. Christian Locasto picked up a ground ball off the next face-off, transitioning the ball to the offensive end to Miller who found Mason for a goal. Fisher goes up 7-4, their biggest lead of the day with 12:59 to go in the third. The Mules fought back and tallied the next four goals of the third quarter to head into the fourth up by a score of 8-7. Mason got his third of the day unassisted five minutes into the fourth, tying the game up a 8-8. The Mules got a quick goal just 10 seconds later going up by one, once again with 10 minutes go to in regulation. Seaman recorded a ground ball and got it down the field to Matt Slowinski who found the back of the net at the 4:25 minute mark to tie the game up 9-9 and ultimately bringing the game into overtime. During the first OT the Cardinals recorded seven shots but none found the back of the net. The teams head into double OT. The Mules won the face-off and immediately called timeout to draw something up. Right out of the timeout the Mules strung together a play and ended the game 40 seconds in by a final score of 10-9.

Mason led the team in goals with three, recording three ground balls, and one caused turnover. Hammond had a 14 saves on the day, finishing with a 58% save percentage. The face-off unit went 13-for-22, leading between the two teams in that category. The team also went 12-for-12 on clears throughout the game.

Up next for the Cardinals, they will host Ursinus College at Growney Stadium on Saturday, March 18 at 1pm.
