Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Ursinus In Homer Opener

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon for their home opener. After a battle, the Cardinals fell short by a score of 13-12. The Cardinals now have a 0-4 overall record, while Ursinus is now 5-2.

The Cardinals came out of the gate fast getting the first goal of the game just one minute in. Samuel Miller finished on his first shot of the game assisted by Timmy Salit. The Bears answered back with the next three goals in a three minute time span. With 5:05 left in the first quarter, Brett Seaman found Ethan Kesselring for a quick goal bringing the score to 3-2, Grizzly Bears lead. Miller picked up a ground ball off an Ursinus turnover getting it to the offensive end safely. A few moments later, Brady Mason found Miller for a goal to tie it up at three a piece. Matthew Kemmis found the back if the net to give the Cardinals the lead since the beginning of the quarter. The teams went into the second tied 4-4. Ursinus got the first goal of the second to go up by one. At the 9:25 minute mark. Salit took it hard to net after picking up a ground ball off a shot and found the back of the net to tie it up at 5-5. Two minutes later Salit took it himself and got his second of the day, Cardinals lead 6-5. The Grizzly Bears fought back and gained the lead with a 7-6 score heading into halftime.

Fisher came out of halftime recording the first two goals, Kesselring from Miller and Kemmis for his second. This brought the Cardinals up by one with 13:30 to go in the third. On the next possession, The Grizzly Bears tied it up at 8-8. Fisher went on a bit of a run, tallying the next three goals of the quarter. To start, Keaton Piconi recorded his first collegiate goal, Kemmis capitalized on a man-up opportunity, assisted by Salit and Jacob Gillian got on the board, to bring the Fisher lead to 11-8 with 5:26 to go in the third. Ursinus tallied two to bring the score to 11-10 heading into the fourth, Fisher leads. The Grizzly Bears came out in the fourth and capitalized on offensive opportunities early on to record three straight goals, and gaining the lead with a score of 13-11. Kesselring found the back of the net for his third goal of the day, assisted by Gallina, but time ran out. At the end of regulation, Ursinus came out on top by a final score of 13-12.

Kesselring lead the team in points with four, three goals and one assist. Kemmis followed with three goals and Ben Hammond had 11 saves on the day.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will down the road on March 22nd and compete against No. 1 RIT. The game is set for a 7pm start time.
