LONGVIEW, TX – The St. John Fisher University softball team continued their spring break trip in Texas with a doubleheader against LeTourneau University. The Cardinals walked away with the sweep, holding on to take game one, 6-4 and then riding an incredible pitching performance to win game two, 4-0. Fisher now holds a record of 4-0 on the season.
Game One: Win, 6-4
The Yellowjackets tallied the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, and then both teams had quiet bats until the fifth inning.
Allie Klonowski singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Grace Mroczka. After a fielding error moved Klonowski to third,
Mari Spitz singled to center field to drive in the teams first run of the day. The next batter,
Maddie Donlin, gave the team a 2-1 lead with a single to left that scored Nadri. LeTourneau evened the score in the bottom of the inning, but the Cardinals kept scoring.
Cassidy Evanetski began the sixth inning with a triple to right-field and Klonowski wasted little time driving her in with an extra base hit of her own, giving the team a 3-2 advantage. Later,
Clare Boegel singled to push Klownoski to third and a passed ball brought her home for the fourth run of the day.
Kelly Cournoyer came to bat and hit a single that brought home Boegel, making the score 5-2. A couple of batters later, Donlin grounded out, but it was enough to drive in the sixth and final run for the Cardinals. It proved to be enough as the team fended off the Yellowjackets and claimed the 6-4 victory.
Jess Patterson earned her first win of the year with a 5.0 inning performance, slowing five hits, two runs, one earned and striking out two.
Cassidy Ormond came in and earned the save, pitching 1.1 innings and gave up no runs and one hit.
Game Two: Win, 4-0
The main star of this game was
Ainsley Evanetski, who pitched all seven innings and had a perfect game going into the final inning of work. It was broken up by the first batter of the frame, but she went on to finish the job and earn her second win of the year.
Scoring for Fisher finally broke through in the sixth inning, when a single from Boegel plated Klonowski. A single two batters later from Spitz would bring the score to 2-0, and an error on a pickoff move brought the score to 4-0.
The four runs would be enough for Evanetski, who steamrolled the Lobos on route to her second win this season and second in as many days. Meanwhile, the Cardinals roll into a 4-0 start.
The Cardinals will have Tuesday off, before facing Hardin-Simmons University in a double-header on Wednesday, March 8. Fisher will play a double-header Thursday against East Texas Baptist, with first pitch set to be a 4 p.m.
