AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team continued their spring break trip on Monday, taking on Saint Joseph's College of Maine. The Cardinals were able to come away with the 5-4 victory and it bring their record to 2-3. The Monks fall to 0-2 on the young campaign.
Fisher struck first and it came in the second inning. After
Luke Duffy walked, he worked his way to scoring position with a passed ball. After
James Murphy was hit by a pitch,
Nick Lemire grounded out and advance both runners.
Jake Meeker took advance and knocked in both runners with a double to left center, bringing the team in front 2-0. In the third inning, the Cardinals added to their lead thanks to an RBI single by Lemire through the left side, scoring
Ben Lavery.
The Monks scored four runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead, but in the bottom of the inning Fisher evened the game again.
Noah Campanelli worked a walk and after advancing to second on a walk by
John Wells, the two runners worked a double steal, and Campanelli was able to come home on an error by the third baseman. Half way through the game, to two teams were tied 4-4. The game winning score came in the sixth winning when Campanelli brought Meeker home on a single down the right field line.
Benjamin Huckas recorded a no decision after getting the start for the Cardinals, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing two hits, two earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
Russell Dunlap earned the win, after going 3.2 innings and giving up just two hits, no runs and striking out a pair of batters.
Ryan O'Mara got the save after coming into the game in the ninth inning and used eight pitches to close out the game.
Meeker finished the day 1-for-2 with one run scored, two RBI and two walks. Campanelli had the game winning RBI and finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and also worked a pair of walks.
James Murphy, Lemire,
Jack Migliore and Lavery all collected hits as well.
Up next for the Cardinals is an afternoon matchup against Buena Vista University in Florida on Tuesday, March 7 with first pitch scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
