Softball Starts Season with Sweep over Centenary

SHREVEPORT, LA – The St. John Fisher University women's softball team (2-0) opened their season and road trip with a pair of wins against the Centenary Ladies (4-6).

Cardinals 7, Ladies 3
The Cardinals opened their season in strong fashion, plating two runs in the first inning, courtesy an RBI single from RF Cassidy Evanetski and DH Clare Boegel. With the Cardinals up 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the Ladies capitalized on two errors by plating two, tying the game at 2-2.

After a silent fourth inning, an error in the top of the fifth allowed LF Maddie Donlin to reach. Following the error, 2B Madi Rose would single and SS Amalia DeMartino walked to load the bases. With another opportunity, C. Evanetski plated two on a single up the middle, giving Fisher a 4-2 edge and forcing a pitching change. The rally continued on an RBI single through the right side from Boegel, stretching the lead to four, up 6-2. In the inning, the Cardinals plated four runs on four hits, an error, and stranded two.

Looking to respond, the Ladies would scratch a run back in the bottom half, cutting the deficit to 6-3. P Jess Patterson would end the day going 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned), walking four and striking out six.

The lead would grow back to four in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from 3B Kelly Cournoyer. Two scoreless innings in relief from Jenna Leydecker helped nail down the win, as the junior was credit with her first career save.

A 2-4, three-RBI performance from C. Evanetski and a three-RBI game from Boegel would be enough to push the Cardinals past the Ladies in game one of the double-header, 7-3.

Cardinals 4, Ladies 0
Looking for the sweep, the Cardinals turned to Ainsley Evanetski on the bump. The sophomore pitched masterfully in the win, scattering three hits in the win.

The Cardinals would start out strong again, plating a run in the first to take an early advantage. After a walk to Rose, a single from DeMartino, and a hit by pitch to C. Evanteski, Klonowski would fly out to deep right, allowing Rose to score.

The score would remain 1-0 through four, before an RBI single to right from Boegel in the top of the fifth gave the Cardinals a slim 2-0 edge.

Fisher would strike again in the fourth, using two walks to get base runners for C. Evanetski and Klonowski, who would both reach and knock in a run, doubling the lead to 4-0.

The Ladies were not able to get much going offensively, as the game was a tale of two teams. The Cardinals would hit 3-9 (.333) with runners in scoring position, while the Ladies were held hitless in nine opportunities with runners on (0-9, .000).

The Cardinals road trip will continue Monday afternoon, when first pitch of a double-header against LeTourneau University (TX) in Marshall, TX is slated for a 4 p.m. EST start.
