No. 24 Women’s Lacrosse Falls Just Short To No. 4 William Smith

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against No. 4 William Smith on Wednesday afternoon. After leading throughout the match up, The Cardinals fell just short by a final score of 10-9. The Cardinals are now 5-2 on the season, while the Herons move to 8-0.

The Herons got a quick start, getting on the board 40 seconds into the match up and recording another to take an early 2-0 lead. Hannah Kumpf converted on the team's first free position attempt of the game to bring the score to 2-1. Less than a minute later, Kumpf found a cutting Courtney O'Dea who put it away tying it up at two apiece. The Herons got the final goal of the first to bring it to 3-2.

Sydney Carptener secured the first draw of the second quarter and got it into the offensive end. Kumpf again finding the open girl in the middle, this time its Carpenter who finds the back of the net to again tie to score up, 3-3. Another draw by Carpenter leads to an unassisted goal by Mary Fiorentino, her first of the night. The Cardinals take their first lead of the day, 4-3. At the 11:52 minute mark, a quick feed from Fiorentino to Farrah Zalla gives Fisher a 5-3 lead. With 9:44 to go until half, the Cardinals clear the ball successfully. This time O'Dea finds a cutting Fiorentino to give Fisher their biggest lead of the day, 6-3. The Herons tally the last two of the half to bring the score to 6-5 Fisher leads at halftime.

Two minutes into the second half, the Herons tally a goal to tie it up at 6-6. 30 seconds later, Fiorentino gets her second assist of the night as she finds Mykenzie Black cutting throughout the 8 and finds the back of the net to regain the lead. Fiorentino gets a hat trick on the night at the 9:34 minute mark, assisted by Carpenter, Cardinals lead 8-6. To keep the Cardinals scoring run alive, Black finds Kaley Griffin who puts it away. Fisher back up by three with 7:21 left in the third. The Herons record the last goal of the third to bring the score to 9-7 heading into the fourth, Fisher leads. 20 seconds into the fourth, William Smiths strings together a play to get a quick goal. With seven to go, the Herons tie it up at 9-9. 3:35 left in regulation, and the Herons tally another to take the lead. The Cardinals fought till the end of regulation but couldn't pull out the win. William Smith took victory by a 10-9 final score.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to SUNY Geneseo on Thursday, April 6th for a 4pm match up.
