Men’s Lacrosse Drops Road Match To No. 9 Amherst College

AMHERST, M.A. - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team competed against No. 9 Amherst College for a Saturday afternoon match up. At the end of regulation, the Mammoths came out on top by a final score of 22-15. Fisher now holds a 0-6 record, while Amherst jumps to 5-1.

Matthew Kemmis got the scoring started for the game, assisted by Timmy Salit for his 11th goal of the season. The Mammoths answered back less than a minute later to tie it up at one a piece. Amherst then went on a scoring run, scoring seven straight goals to bring the score to 8-1. Salit ends to run and finds the back of the net with 24 seconds left in the first to make the score 8-2. Amherst recorded the first three goals of the second quarter to bring the score to 11-2. Griffin Dautrich took it hard to net and got his first goal of the day. Fisher took over the momentum and tallied the next three goals to close to deficit. Colin Blakeslee scored his first goal of the season, Kemmis got his second of the day assisted by Jacob Gallina just 45 seconds later and Brett Seaman put it in the back of the net assisted by Gallina to close to deficit with an 11-6 score. With 30 seconds left until halftime, Gallina converted on a man-up opportunity, assisted by Evan Pashalides. Heading into halftime, the score was 13-7, Mammoths lead.

The Mammoths got a quick start and tallied the first two goals of the half. Kemmis picked up a face-off and took it to cage hard to get a hat trick on the day, 15-8 Mammoths lead. The Cardinals cleared the ball safely to the offensive end, where Seaman found Gallina for a goal. About one minute later, Gallina scored again on a man-up play to bring the score to 18-10 with 5:56 left in the third, and got a hat trick on the day. Amherst got the last goal of the third quarter to go up 19-10 heading into the fourth. To start the scoring for Fisher in the fourth, Lane Edinger found the back of the net for the first time today off an assist by Kemmis. In the next play, Gallina recorded his fourth unassisted, Fisher is down 21-12 with 9:32 left in regulation. The Cardinals got two quick back to back goals in attempt to close the gap, both scored by Ethan Kesselring on two man-up opportunities. Seaman recorded the last goal of the game with three minutes to go. The Cardinals ran out of time and fell short to the Mammoths at the end of regulation.

Gallina ended the day leading the team in points. He recorded four goals and three assists for seven points, and added one ground ball. Kemmis was right behind with three goals, one assist and five ground balls. Ben Hammond recorded 18 saves on the day for a .45 save percentage.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will host SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, March 29 at 7pm.
