PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against SUNY Oswego on Wednesday. After a tight first half, the Cardinals had a solid second half and pulled away to win by a final score of 13-6. The Cardinals now hold an overall record of 3-1, while the Lakers fall to 3-2 on the season.
To start the scoring out for the match up, Mary Fiorentino finished on a quick catch and shot, assisted by Sydney Carpenter. The Lakers capitalized on a turnover bringing the score to 1-1. Lauren Swartz picked up a ground ball and transitioned it to the offensive end where Carpenter recorded her first goal of the day, making the score 2-1 with 7:46 to go. The Lakers answered right back just 30 seconds later to tie it up at two apiece. Both teams got two quick goals at the end of the first to head into the second quarter tied at 3-3. Oswego put one in to go up by one at the 12:53 minute mark. The Cardinals answered back with a hard drive to goal by Tara Osterdale to tie the game at 4-4 with 8:32 left. 27 seconds later, Carpenter finds Courtney O'Dea cutting through the 8-meter to net a goal, 5-4 Cardinals lead. Cara Laundry got the last goal of the half for Fisher, to bring the Cardinals into halftime up by a score of 6-5.
Five minutes into the second half, Hanna Kumpf found Carpenter, connecting on a pass, to make the score 7-5. The Lakers scored their only goal of the third quarter on a free position shot to bring it to a one-goal game. With 4:05 left in the third, Farrah Zalla found the back of the net to put the Cardinals back up by two, and headed into the fourth with a 8-6 score. Carpenter controlled the first draw of the fourth, settling it in the offensive end. Kumpf took it hard to net, getting her first of the day, 9-6 Cardinals lead. Fisher went on to score four straight goals, holding the Lakers scoreless in the fourth quarter. Mykenzie Black with two, Carpenter with her third and Kayla Schatz with one. With this run, the Cardinals won at the end of regulation by a score of 13-6.
Carpenter led the team in goals and points on the day with three goals and two assists for five points. She also dominated in draws finishing with 18 out of the 23. She also tallied two ground balls and one caused turnover. Black recorded two goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw control on the day. Maddie Lowney led the team in caused turnovers with three, and in ground balls with five. Lilly Goodsell ended the day in net with eight saves on 14 shots on goal for a .57 save percentage.
Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Scranton, PA and compete against The University of Scranton on Saturday, March 18 at 1pm.
