Women’s Lacrosse Continues Win Streak On the Road Against The Royals

SCRANTON, P.A. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against The University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon on the road. Fisher dominated in the first half, which led to the overall success throughout the match up. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals won by a final score of 7-5. Fisher now holds a 4-1 overall record, while the Royals are now 1-5.

To start the scoring out, the Cardinals got on the board first, Mykenzie Black converted on the team's first free position attempt of the game. Cara Landry took it hard to cage to bring the Cardinals up by two early on in the first. The Fisher defense held strong, allowing the offense to capitalize on possessions. Maddie Lowney transitioned the ball to the offensive end where Hanna Kumpf found Courtney O'Dea for a goal; Fisher goes up 3-0 with 2:46 remaining in the first. To finish out the quarter, Black tallies her second of the day, off another assist by Kumpf. Fisher heads into the second quarter leading 4-0. Scranton got on the board to end the Cardinals scoring streak. O'Dea capitalized on a man-up opportunity to bring the Cardinals back up by four. The teams head into halftime with the Cardinals leading 5-1.

The Royals recorded a goal just 40 seconds into the third quarter. Just one minute later, Mary Fiorentino converted on a free position shot to bring the score to 6-2. Scranton tallied the remaining two goals of the quarter, while Fisher just could not connect on their shots late in the third. Heading into the fourth the score stands at 6-4 Cardinals lead. Fisher took five shots early on in the fourth before Hanna Kumpf put it in the back of the net for her first of the day. Scranton answered right back to bring the score to 7-5 with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Both teams created scoring opportunities down the stretch, but the defensive ends held strong. The Cardinals came out on top by a final score of 7-5.

Black and O'Dea ended the day with two goals each. Black recorded two ground balls, one draw control and one caused turnover. Lowney led on the defensive end with three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Cortland, N.Y. to compete against SUNY Cortland on Wednesday March 22nd at 3:45pm.
