Strong Second Half Leads Women’s Lacrosse To Victory Over Tigers

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed against Colorado College on Friday night in Colorado Springs. After a dominant second half performance, Fisher defeated the Tigers by a score of 11-9. The Cardinals are now 2-1 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-2.

The Tigers got a quick start to the first quarter, netting the first two goals of the game. Cara Landry answered back and tallied the first goal of the game for the Cardinals at the 7:06 minute mark. Hanna Kumpf followed right behind not even a minute later getting her first of the night and tying the score up at two apiece. Sydney Carpenter possessed the next draw control for Fisher getting the ball to the offensive end. On the next play, Kumpf found Carpenter on a cut for a quick catch and shoot, giving the Cardinals their first lead of the night, 3-2. With 2:15 left in the first quarter, Kumpf put it in the back of the net off an assist by Carpenter, heading into the second quarter up 4-3. Kumpf picked up right where she left off, getting herself a hat trick, assisted by Farrah Zalla to make it 5-3 with 13 minutes to go. The Tigers took over the second quarter from there, recording the next three goals of the half. The teams headed into halftime with a score of 6-5, Tigers lead.

Five minutes in, Mary Fiorentino recorded her first of the night to get the scoring started out of halftime, tying the score at 6-6. The Tigers took advantage of a free position shot and took a quick lead. With 1:35 left in the third, Kumpf took it hard to the net and tied it up once again at 7-7 heading into the fourth. The Cardinals came out fast in the fourth, recording four goals in three and a half minutes and taking a 11-7 lead. Landry started the run for Fisher, Fiorentino followed converting on a free position shot and Kumpf tallied two to get her sixth goal of the night. The Tigers fought back and tallied the last two goals of the quarter but it wasn't enough. The Cardinals held on and won by a final score of 11-9.

Kumpf ended the night leading the team in goals with six, which is a season high. She recorded one assist, one ground ball and two draw controls. Carpenter recorded 12 draw controls, leading the team and getting a season high. She also tallied one goal, one assist, two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Shannon Foster and Mykenzie Black both recorded three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will host SUNY Oswego on Wednesday, March, 15th at 4pm.
