PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team hosted the University of Rochester on Wednesday night in their season and home opener. The Cardinals defeated the Yellow Jackets after 60 minutes by a final score of 10-7. Fisher moves to 1-0 on the season and the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-1.

Fisher was first to get on the board, at the 7:42 minutes mark, Hanna Kumpf scored the first goal of the season for the Cardinals. Sydney Carpenter won the next draw for Fisher and took it to the net herself, with a backhand shot she put the Cardinals up 2-0. Fisher continued to dominate the first quarter, Kumpf got her second goal of the night, assisted by Cara Landry. The first free position goal of the evening was scored by Farrah Zalla giving the Cardinals a 4-1 lead heading into the second quarter. Carpenter picked up a ground ball on the defensive end, transitioning it down the field, finding Landry who assisted Mary Fiorentino for her first of the night. The Yellow Jackets tried to chip away at the early lead created by the Cardinals, netting the last goal of the half. The teams went into half time with Fisher up 6-3.

The second half started slow for both teams, a back and forth defensive battle for the majority of the third quarter. The Cardinals recorded three shots in the first 12 minutes of the quarter but couldn't get by the Yellow Jacket keeper. With 2:28 to go in the third, Landry put one in the back of the net, assisted by Tara Osterdale to end the scoring drought, giving Fisher a 7-3 lead. Carpenter chipped one in at the start of the fourth, assisted by Sydney Closinski to get her second of the day. Less than one minute later, Courtney O'Dea tallied one, again assisted by Osterdale, Fisher leads 9-3 with 12:26 to go. The Yellow Jackets fought hard to come back, recording two quick goals bringing the score to 9-5. Kumpf tallied her third of the night to end the Yellow Jackets momentum. The Cardinal defensive held on strong for the last five minutes of play, securing Fisher a 10-7 win.

Up next for the Cardinals, they travel to Colorado Springs, CO to compete against Messiah University on Wednesday March, 8th at 2pm.
