Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short to No. 14 Messiah

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team traveled to Colorado College to compete against Messiah University on Wednesday. After a 60 minute battle, the Cardinals fell short to the Falcons by a final score of 9-7. Fisher now holds a 1-1 record, while Messiah jumps to 4-1.

Kaley Griffin started out the scoring, tallying the first goal of the night off a free position shot. The Falcons answered right back off the next draw control to even the score at 1 a piece with 13:23 to go in the first quarter. The next 12 minutes there was no scoring by either team, a defensive battle on both ends. Lily Goodsell recorded five saves on seven shots in first quarter to keep the Cardinals right in it. With 1:21 left in the first, Courtney O'Dea got on the board and ended the scoring drought, bringing the Cardinals up 2-1. The Falcons recorded a goal with eight seconds left, ending the first quarter tied up at 2. Kayla Schtaz converted on a free position attempt to get on the board first in the second quarter. Messiah answered back recording the next three goals to bring the score to 5-3 with 8:53 left in the half. Tara Osterdale finished on a free position to end the Falcons run.With 25 seconds left in the half, Mykenzie Black go on the board off an assist by Kaley Griffin, the teams went into halftime with a score of 5-5.

The teams went back and forth for the first six minutes of the third quarter. The Falcons recorded the only three goals of the third, bringing the score to 8-5 heading into the fourth. O'Dea netted her second of the night, assisted by Mary Fiorentino, bringing the score to 8-6 with 9:40 to go. Fiorentino recorded the last goal of regulation off a free position shot. The Falcons held on and won at the end of regulation by a score of 9-7. The Cardinals had six different goal scorers on the night. Sydney Carpenter led the team in draw controls with eight, and recorded four ground balls. Goodsell held strong in net, recording 13 saves on 22 shots on goal, for a 59% save percentage.

Up next for the Cardinals, they will compete against Colorado College in Colorado Springs on Friday, March 10 at 4pm.
