Cardinals Drop Opener To Red Dragons

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team was on the road on Wednesday to open their season against SUNY Cortland. The Cardinals had an early advantage, but were unable to hold on, dropping the game 12-5 after four quarters. They begin the year 0-1, while the Red Dragons move to 1-0.

Fisher got off to a strong start, with shots by Ethan Kesselring and Timmy Salit both forcing saves by the goalie. The Red Dragons struck first at the 10:53 mark, but three minutes later Brady Mason scored the first goal of the new season. With 4:04 to play, Mattew Kemmis got on the board off an assist by Griffin Dautrich, in order to move the team in front 2-1, which is where the first quarter ended. The second quarter did not go in the Cardinals favor, as they were outscored 4-0 and trailed 5-2 entering half time.

Dautrich scored his first of the year at the 6:27 mark in the third frame in order to cut the teams deficit to 5-3. However, Cortland tallied three goals in under two minutes to secure their lead at 8-3. With time winding down in the third, Mason recorded his second goal of the game to cut the score to 8-4. He later finished off his hat-trick with a score in the fourth quarter. The contest ended with Fisher losing 12-5.

Mason ended the game with 10 shots, five of which were on goal, and his three goals. Samuel Miller ended with four shots, three were on target and Salit also added four shots, with two that were on goal.

Up next is another road game, this time at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, March 4. The contest is set to start at 2 p.m.
