PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team competed against Houghton University at home for a Saturday afternoon Empire 8 matchup. On senior day, the Cardinals claimed a 77-56 victory over the Highlanders. With this win, Fisher's record improves to 19-2 overall and 14-0 in the Empire 8, with the Highlanders moving to a record of 14-6 overall and 7-6 in conference play.
The first quarter started slow for the Cardinals, with
Claire Kruszka scoring a good jumper, after two and a half minutes. Shortly after,
Katie Moravec scored a good jumper, followed by a Highlander's layup. A couple of minutes later,
Sidney Tomasso got on the scoreboard with a good jumper. The teams went back-and-forth in a closely fought quarter, with Kruszka making a good layup and a free-throw, to put Fisher up, 14-13. Ka. Moravec started the second quarter strong, scoring a good layup 30 seconds in. The two teams continued to battle, with
Lauren Nawojski getting on the scoreboard with a jumper. The Cardinals began to fall behind, until Nawojski pushed past the Highlanders with another jump shot, making the game 28-27, in Fisher's favor. Ka. Moravec proceeded to score four points, followed by
Presleigh Brunner ending the half with a good jumper.
The second half started with
Anna Milham starting an eight-point run with a good layup and a free throw. After Houghton's layup, Kruszka quickly replied with a layup of her own, putting the score at 44-29. 30-seconds later, Walker made a layup, increasing the Cardinal's lead. The rest of the quarter involved the two teams sharing the points, with
Hannah Ferguson scoring a free throw. The final quarter started with Walker making layup, early on and a minute later, Tomasso scored two free throws, pushing the Cardinal's further ahead of Houghton. The teams continued to battle, with Tomasso making a layup to start a six-point run. Fisher's last points of the game came from Ferguson, making a good three-pointer, followed by a Highlanders free throw, the game ending 77-56.
Leading the Cardinals in points was Ka. Moravec, scoring 24 points while shooting 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, and collecting four rebounds. Tomasso also had a strong performance, scoring 13 points, collecting eight rebounds, and three assists. Kruszka led in assists with five, while also scoring 13 points and playing 35 minutes. Brunner scored eight points, while collecting six rebounds and three assists.
The Cardinals play again at home on Tuesday, Feb. 7. They take on Utica College for a 5:30 p.m. Empire 8 matchup.
