PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team competed against Utica University for a Tuesday night Empire 8 matchup. The Cardinals claimed a 118-64 victory over the Pioneers. With this win, Fisher's record improves to 20-2 overall and 15-0 in the Empire 8, with the Pioneers moving to a record of 9-12 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
The first quarter started out fast, with
Katie Moravec scoring a good jumper 11 seconds in. Utica quickly replied, and Fisher following with a nine-point run, started by
Sidney Tomasso's layup. Shortly after,
Presleigh Brunner scored a three-pointer and a good layup, putting the score at 16-6. The quarter ended with
Kaitlyn Walker scoring a layup and making a free throw, the Cardinals winning 32-13.
Walker carried her momentum into the second quarter, making a good layup 11 seconds in. The Cardinals scored nine more points before the Pioneers responded with a three-pointer, the score at 43-16. The teams went back and forth, before the Cardinals started an eight-point run, led by Tomasso's fast break layup. Shortly after,
Lauren Nawojski made a good layup and a jumper, making the score 55-21. The Pioneers scored three points, before
Emily McLaughlin got on the scoreboard with a good three-pointer, followed by three-pointers by Tomasso and
Anna Milham. The half ended with
Hannah Ferguson scoring a good three-pointer, the Cardinals leading 69-27.
Brunner started the second half out strong for the Cardinals, making a three-pointer in the first minute. Fisher continued, scoring eight more points, the streak ended by a Utica three-pointer. Following this, Tomasso sparked an eight-point run, after scoring a jumper. A couple minutes later, the Cardinals scored three-straight three-pointers; two coming from Kruszka and one coming from Ka. Moravec. The quarter ended with the Pioneers scoring 13-straight, but Fisher leading 97-46. The final quarter began with Nawojski scoring a good layup, followed by another layup a minute later. The teams kept going back and forth, highlighted by Ka. Moravec making two good layups and a free-throw, the score 110-56. The game ended with
Carlee Elliott scoring a three-pointer, with Fisher winning 118-64.
Leading the Cardinals in points was Tomasso, scoring 26 points while shooting 11-for-15, collecting six rebounds, and four assists. Kruszka was not far behind, scoring 23 points while going five-for-five on three-pointers and seven-for-seven, overall. Leading in rebounds was Nawojski, who collected 8, while also scoring nine points and grabbing three assists. Ka. Moravec also had a strong performance, grabbing six steals, 16 points, and four assists.
The Cardinals play away next on Saturday, Feb. 11. They take on Nazareth College for a 5:00 p.m. Empire 8 matchup.
